Chapter Twenty-Nine
Rosie followed Jones out of the drawing room, up the sweeping stairs to the first floor, and into a large bedroom. The focal point was a high four poster bed with carved oak posts on each corner. The dark red velvet valance that framed the base below crisp white bedding oozed elegance.
Rosie walked into the centre of the room and faced the foot of the bed. Her heels sank into the deep pile of the beige carpet. It was the kind of bedroom her mother would love. She’d spend hours scanning home and garden magazines that were full of exquisite luxury décor, just like this.
Jones stepped up behind her and in a second released her from the handcuffs. ‘There now, that should make you more comfortable. Now wait here for your guest and remember what I told you. You must make him happy, very happy.’
She remained silent.
‘Look at me.’
She turned but hesitated before raising her eyes to his.
‘Let me hear you say what I’ve just told you.’
‘I must make him happy, sir.’
‘Good.’ He turned to leave.
‘Sir.’
He paused.
‘Can I ask you a question?’
He turned and stared at her as if deciding whether to allow her a question. Then shrugged. ‘What is it?’
‘Are they going to kill me?’
He sighed. ‘So you picked up on the comments about termination?’
She nodded.
‘The members here tonight are VIP members. They have the authority to do anything they wish to the girls I provide. Most of the time it’s sex, and sometimes there’s sadomasochism. It’s rare, but occasionally things go further. But don’t worry, I doubt they will go that far tonight. They are very rich people, but fifty-thousand is probably beyond what they would be willing to pay.’
‘Can they pay it as a group?’
He laughed. ‘Lateral thinking, I like that. But no, whoever does the deed, pays the fee. Or should I change the rules?’
Rosie shook her head.
‘Then don’t worry about it. Tonight is not your night to die.’
Rosie sighed, her galloping heart slowed to a canter. ‘Sir, why do you do this? You’re rich. You could be anywhere doing anything you want. Why are you doing this to me?’
‘Because I can. As you say, I’m rich, but not as rich as the Members. They are some of the wealthiest men in the Country. A few of them earn more in a day than most men earn in a year. Many of the others hold prominent positions in multinational companies, or in government, or in the medical, or legal professions. We even have celebrities. And some fly in from abroad. They have high-pressure jobs, high-pressure lives, and need to let off steam. This is how they choose to do it.’
‘So raping and killing girls is just letting off steam?’
‘That’s four questions. You asked for one.’ He paused for a moment. ‘I don’t usually talk to the girls like this, but you’re brighter than most so I’ll explain. It wasn’t always like this. It started out innocent enough. I began throwing parties for wealthy and powerful men who wanted to spend time with beautiful young women without any complications.
